Adult Education

The FOD Adult Education Program's promotes horticulute, wellness, and sustainability. The goal is to provide learning experiences to our visitors and members with the use of this unique and globally diverse facility. We look forward to welcoming members of our plant-loving community to the Domes and other venues across the greater Milwaukee area for engaging workshops and classes.

All education offerings require preregistration and payment online prior to the date of the workshop. 

*Please note: Upon purchase, you will not receive a ticket in the mail for these classes, unless otherwise stated. Your confirmation email acts as your ticket.*

The Education Director will email you with additional information 1-3 days before your workshop. 

FOD Adult Education Workshops Cancellation and Refund Policy: Registrants may cancel workshop registrations up to one week in advance of the workshop and receive 75% of the original price. Cancellations made after this time are nonrefundable. Cancellations made 3 weeks prior to the workshops will be refunded 100%. Note: this cancellation policy applies to Adult Education Workshops only.

FOD Media/Photo Release Policy: Photos and other media taken during the class may be used for marketing purposes. By purchasing a class registration, you are constenting to this policy. Please email if we may not use photos in our marketing efforts.

Holiday Bough Trimming - Make a Holiday Wreath 

 

Friday, December 10th, 4:00pm - 6:00pm

 

Location: Riveredge Nature Center. 4458 County Rd Y, Saukville, WI 53080.  This program DOES NOT take place at the Mitchell Park Domes! 

 

Cost: $20 for FOD or Riveredge members. $25 for Nonmembers. 

 

Learn how to properly trim your evergreen trees to create festive and natural holiday decorations. Under the guidance of a Riveredge Naturalist, identify and trim native boughs and branches from around Riveredge Nature Center. Then weave our materials into a welcoming table wreath to use during your holiday entertaining or as a beautiful and unique handmade gift. Slow down in this busy time of year to enjoy the scenic outdoors, spend time with friends, and learn a new skill for holiday seasons to come. Coffee and cocoa will be provided to keep us warm!

Homemade Candles as Gifts

Sunday, December 12th, 1pm-2:30

Light up the season and bring nature indoors with the creation of naturally-scented candles! Learn the history of candle making, how essential oils are made, and visit our herbs in the Show Dome. We'll make soy candles from upcycled jars - take home one large candle and one small candle.

Plant Illustrations with Kaylee Bird

 

Wednesday, December 15, 4pm-5pm

Location: Mitchell Park Domes Education Center. Meet in the front entrance of the Domes. A staff member will be waiting next to the entrance line to sign you in

Join MIAD student Kaylee Bird as we learn the process of scientific illustration of plants. In this beginners course, we will tour the tropical dome and practice drawing plants together. 

Cost: $12 for FOD members. $15 for Nonmembers. This program includes entrance to the Domes prior to the program.

Green Infrastructure in Urban Areas with Tom Mortensen

Tom Mortensen, PLA, ASLA – Site Planner / Landscape Architect

 

Tom has over 35 years of experience in site design, landscape architecture and related design and constration professions. Tom has expertise in site planning, urban spaces, park and public open space design, restoration plans and integrated stormwater management, and green infrastructure. He has worked on design projects with the US Forest Service, National Parks Service, Boy Scouts, Native American Tribes, and the US Dept of Veterans Affairs. Since 2011, he has been teaching at the UWM School of Continuing Education in the Water Technology Certification program on the topic of green infrastructure. 

 

 

Succulent Propagation with Friends of the Domes

What is a succulent? We'll take a trip to the desert and find out. Learn how to care for and successfully multiply these hardy houseplants, and take two home! 

Cost: $12 for FOD members. $15 for Nonmembers. This program includes entrance to the Domes prior to the program.
